Soft contact lenses (regular cornea)

Regular Cornea

For regular or healthy corneas (without keratoconus), almost any type of contact lens can be fitted—whether hard or soft, in any of their variations.

Soft lenses are the most common type of contact lens; they are comfortable in almost all situations and cover a wide range of prescriptions. While ideal for low to moderate prescriptions, they unfortunately do not work well for cases of keratoconus or corneal transplants. They can perform well for high astigmatism (without keratoconus), though visual quality will not match that of rigid lenses.

As with any contact lens fitting, a proper assessment of the corneal surface and tear quality is essential to prevent discomfort and ensure the lenses can be worn for most of the day without pain or complications.

There are several wear schedules; the main ones are:

  • Daily replacement
  • Monthly replacement
  • Annual replacement

The recommended wear schedule depends on how the patient intends to use the lenses. With any soft lens, strict hygiene measures must be followed to prevent infections.
