Rigid GP lenses (irregular cornea)

Irregular cornea

Irregular corneas cause blurred vision that cannot be fully corrected with standard eyeglasses, soft contact lenses, or refractive surgery. This primarily occurs in cases of:

  • Keratoconus.
  • Corneal transplants.
  • Intracorneal rings.
  • Pellucid marginal degeneration or Terrien's marginal degeneration.
  • Vision correction surgeries that had poor outcomes.

Difference between regular and irregular corneas

Recently, scleral lenses have become the most popular treatment for these cases; however, what happens if you are not a candidate for scleral lenses? Or what if you simply do not wish to wear them?

There are many other treatment options available, primarily rigid corneal lenses or hybrid lenses.

  • Standard rigid lenses: Traditional rigid lenses. When properly fitted, they provide good vision and acceptable comfort; however, if poorly fitted, they tend to move excessively, easily dislodge from the eye, and cause significant discomfort.
  • Optimized-curve rigid lenses: Lenses manufactured using multiple "mini-curves" that form the lens's overall curvature. They offer far greater comfort and stability than standard rigid lenses, particularly for cases of keratoconus.
  • Optimized-curve rigid lenses for dry eyes: These can be fitted to almost any cornea, including post-corneal transplant eyes or advanced keratoconus cases. They feature surface treatments that prevent dryness and eliminate the need for constant rewetting drops to keep the lenses lubricated.
  • 3D rigid lenses: Lenses designed based on a precision corneal scan, offering the highest level of comfort possible with a rigid lens. They also prevent dryness.
  • Hybrid lenses: A single lens featuring a rigid center and a soft periphery. They combine the stability of a soft lens with the superior vision of a rigid lens; their main drawbacks are a shorter lifespan compared to rigid lenses and a tendency to dry out easily.

Determining the best option among these lenses is done during a consultation, where all variables of the specific case are analyzed.
